{"id":357,"date":"2011-08-08T19:39:40","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T19:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hotel-lobbyists.com\/blog\/?p=357"},"modified":"2011-08-08T19:39:40","modified_gmt":"2011-08-08T19:39:40","slug":"getting-bumped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotel-lobbyists.com\/index.php\/2011\/08\/08\/getting-bumped\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Bumped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hotel-lobbyists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/first-class-qantas-a380.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-358\" title=\"first-class-qantas-a380\" src=\"http:\/\/hotel-lobbyists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/first-class-qantas-a380-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s happened to most of us while traveling \u2013 getting bumped.\u00a0 However I\u2019ve been the recipient of both kinds, good bumps and bad bumps.\u00a0 Allow me to stray from my typical blog model and share with you a couple of anecdotes from my now long and storied travel history.\u00a0 Interestingly, both bump events happened when I was on personal travel for leisure.<!--more-->In 2005 I was scheduled for an eight day long trip to Ireland.\u00a0 My itinerary had me leaving Washington and connecting in Boston for a once-a-day departure to Dublin in the evening.\u00a0 When I arrived at Reagan National Airport, I was surprised to learn that I had been bumped from my shuttle flight from Washington to Boston and placed on a later flight.\u00a0 The later flight would have me missing my connection however, my once daily connection and the only way I could get to Ireland that day.\u00a0 And despite the airline\u2019s best efforts (or no effort), I couldn\u2019t be rebooked on another airline to ensure I\u2019d make my connection.\u00a0 Thus I lost an entire day of my vacation to Ireland because I wouldn\u2019t be able to get on the flight to Dublin until 24hrs later.\u00a0 What made matters more complicated was that I was meeting my friend who would be sleeping at a London airport the night prior and waiting for my arrival in Dublin in the morning.\u00a0 She had been traveling the globe for six months and did not have cell phone capability.\u00a0 My only hope was to call the airport police while she was sleeping in the airport somewhere and have her paged until she came to the phone.\u00a0 Miraculously, I was able to reach her and let her know she\u2019d be on her own in Dublin on the first day.\u00a0 The happy ending to this story?\u00a0 The next day, for my inconvenience, I was upgraded to first class.\u00a0 International first class!\u00a0 Fully reclining seats, a five course dinner, and all the sleep I could muster.\u00a0 This is the only way airlines can repay travelers for missing out on 13% of their vacation.<\/p>\n<p>Just this year I was traveling with my girlfriend to Spain.\u00a0 I had purchased her ticket using air miles and we had purchased my own ticket the traditional way.\u00a0 Because of that, it wasn\u2019t immediately clear to the airline that we were, in fact, traveling together.\u00a0 For that reason, they paid no attention to our seating next to each other, and bumped me.\u00a0 But this time, a good bump.\u00a0 This time I had status!\u00a0 And so they moved me from seat 25G to seat\u2026 1A.\u00a0 And they left her behind in seat 25H.\u00a0 On this particular aircraft, rows 2 through 6 were a special business class but row 1 was a class unto itself.\u00a0 While the bump was a very kind gesture, I sure couldn\u2019t appreciate it because they\u2019d be splitting us up for 8 hours.\u00a0 There was no chance of getting a second upgrade either.\u00a0 And so sadly, I thought it would be much easier for her to ask the person who was sitting in the middle seat of the twenty-fifth row if he or she might like to have a try at row one, than it might be for me to ask the person in seat 1B who may have actually paid for his or her luxurious upgrade, if the twenty-fifth row would have any appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Mission accomplished.\u00a0 That is, I gave up my sleeper seat, my five course luncheon complete with ice cream sundae bar, for the comfort and confines of being with my girlfriend.\u00a0 Awh, how thoughtful.\u00a0 Just another bump in the sky.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s happened to most of us while traveling \u2013 getting bumped.\u00a0 However I\u2019ve been the recipient of both kinds, good bumps and bad bumps.\u00a0 Allow me to stray from my typical blog model and share with you a couple of anecdotes from my now long and storied travel history.\u00a0 Interestingly, both bump events happened when [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[2,1],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.3 -
