Omni Shoreham

Everyone knows the Omni Shoreham.   The Shoreham has been a Washington, DC staple since 1930 and, as their website will tell you, has played host to presidents, world leaders, and inaugural balls.  There might not be more prestigious or famous spirits walking the halls of this grand historic hotel.  Because of its location in Woodley Park, just over the bridge from Dupont Circle, the Omni, unlike just about any other DC hotel is able to sit on 11 acres and yet still be walking distance from a myriad of shops, dining, the Metro and even the National Zoo.  This is what makes it an absolute favorite for both business and leisure travelers.  It’s able to be in the heart of all things Washington and yet also feel like its removed enough to give respite to weary travelers.

The hotel is busy, very busy, year round.  Despite having well over 800 guest rooms, the hotel is sold out quite often.  This is a product of it having some of the best meeting space in the area, and also that its history lends itself to an extraordinary percentage of repeat business.  It’s as if you don’t book your program years and years out, there’s little hope of being able to find requisite availability when you need.  If there’d a downside to the Shoreham, that must be it.  I once said to them, “booking the Shoreham is like finding a pediatrician.  If you’re not with them since birth, good luck getting in!”

But all the more reason to book if you can.  The Omni is a luxury level hotel with grand spaces and wonderful history, without feeling old or stodgy.  Rooms are updated, renovated and well laid out.  And the staff is exceptional, many of whom have been there for a generation.  I was fortunate enough to stay at the Shoreham during the holiday season when the hotel is all decked out in holiday gear.  Walking through their lobby at Christmas time is like walking through Macy’s in New York on Christmas Eve.  The spirit is in the air here for sure.
